Hussar = soldier on horse who fought riding
Catering = village (often many farms) which in duty was bound to equip ”man and horse”
The farmers in the catering should keep a cottage for the soldier and help him with sowing and harvest, especially if the soldier was out in war or training. A hussar was often a respected man, not least on solemn occasions in the parish, when they paraded in their festival uniforms.
Bergebo dates back to 1692, when the cottage was mentioned in the general enrolment list for the first time. It was common that the post was handed down from father to son, and in Bergebo the families Stolt and Kask have lived, among others, in three generations. Sven August Kask (1870-1958), maybe the last ”classified” hussar, lived here with his family into the 1940´s. They had 12 children.
